Exploring Vehicle-Mounted Wind Energy Harvesting

Mobile Windmill is an exploratory product concept investigating how wind energy might be captured from moving vehicles and converted into electrical power for off-grid applications.
Developed by Misfit Design Studio, the project focused on the design, visualization, and early testing of a compact wind-harvesting device intended for recreational vehicles and campervans.
The Challenge
Off-grid travel often depends on limited onboard energy sources, creating interest in additional ways to generate power while on the move or at rest.
This project explored whether a compact, vehicle-mounted wind device could offer a portable and non-invasive approach to supplemental energy generation.
The challenge was to create a concept that balanced aerodynamic form, ease of installation, and practical usability within the constraints of a small mounted product.
The Concept
Mobile Windmill features a tri-blade rotor housed within an aerodynamic protective form. The assembly is mounted to a rotating stem and supported by a vacuum-mount base intended to allow temporary installation without permanent vehicle modification.
The concept was designed for use on RVs and campervans, where compactness, portability, and ease of attachment are important considerations.
The project explored how such a device could be packaged and integrated as a self-contained product while maintaining a visually streamlined form.
Design & Development
The development process included concept generation, CAD modeling, product visualization, and exploratory testing.
Particular attention was given to the overall housing geometry, the blade enclosure, and the mounting strategy. Visualization work helped refine the appearance and communicate how the product would function in context.
The project also included fluid-dynamics exploration to better understand airflow behavior around the proposed design and to inform further refinement.
Outcome
Mobile Windmill resulted in a developed concept and prototype exploration that illustrates Misfit's ability to investigate unconventional product ideas through design, visualization, and technical analysis.
As an independent studio project, it reflects our interest in experimental product concepts and our willingness to explore emerging opportunities through iterative development and testing.
